Our standard

Built to WCAG 2.2 AA.

We design and test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA, the standard referenced for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What we have done

Small things, kept carefully.

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a link to skip straight to the content.
  • Text and form fields meet AA contrast in both light and dark mode.
  • Images and brush art carry text descriptions; decorative marks are hidden from screen readers.
  • Form fields have labels, required fields are marked, and messages are announced to screen readers.
  • Animation stops when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Pages hold together when text is enlarged to 200% and on small screens.
  • Links that open a new tab say so.
Known limits

Where we are still working.

The Japanese brush terms are images of hand-cut lettering. Each has a text name, but the artwork itself cannot be read aloud letter by letter. If anything on the site is hard to use, we want to know.

Tell us

If something is in your way.

Write to the house and begin your note with “Accessibility.” Tell us the page and what happened. A host will reply personally and can share any information on the site in another format, or help you by text or phone.
